Year 7 Persuasive Speech Presentation

A letter to the principal

Dear Principal,

Did you know that around 21% of Australian students speak second languages in schools? That is around 4.2 million students! I would like to clarify my perspective. I believe that every student should learn a second language in schools and I strongly recommend it to be continuously in place even throughout VCE. Some people would disagree and that is why I am here. I am going to show you why learning another language is important and crucial in educational systems.

Australia is an intercontinental country. There is a vast amount of different languages that many Australian citizens speak. English language possesses about 73% of Australian speakers while Mandarin and Arabic follow. Students must learn other languages because they must be able to communicate with others from different racial backgrounds.

While I believe that language studies improve students’ abilities to communicate with others from different backgrounds, I also trust the fact that students’ skills in other subjects improve through these language studies. About 63% of VCE students say that language studies impacted their scores and daily life. It is important for students to study languages because it improves their skills in other subjects.

Some may say language studies show no possible effect in their daily lives. This statement has been proven wrong through many scientific research. Second languages give students the ability to become excellent speakers in the future. This is important since people must have self-confidential abilities to succeed in the future.

Learning second languages in schools is crucial to our educational system and we can benefit from learning them. I encourage you to make language studies compulsory in schools and I strongly suggest for students not having the option. I suggest you change your decision and let us start making language studies compulsory today. It is never too late!

Warm Regards,
Hanad Abdullahi,
Sirius College student.
